Next Event: Country Houses of Dublin & Kildare.

Posted: 10/5/2017

Next week, 19th May we are delighted to offer members the opportunity to visit country houses in Dublin and Kildare, including Lucan House, residence to the Itailian Ambassador and Castletown House, saved by Hon Desmond Guinness, founder of the Irish Georgian Society.

Lucan.jpgOur visit begins at Lucan House and Demesne, Lucan, County Dublin.  Lucan House, described as a pure Palladian villa, was built in 1772 by Agmondisham Vesey.  Vesey, although not an architect, designed the house in conjunction with William Chambers, who also designed the Casino at Marino.  The current custodian is his Excellency Giovanni Adorni Braccesi, Italian Ambassador to Ireland who will be present to personally walk us around.

The visit will continue at Castletown House and Gardens, Celbridge, County Kildare, Ireland’s largest and earliest Palladian style house.  Built between 1722 - 1729 for William Conolly, Speaker of the Irish House of Commons. The house remained in the Conolly family until 1965 when purchased by a property developer.  The future of the house and demesne was saved in 1967 when purchased by the Hon Desmond Guinness, founder of the Irish Georgian Society.  In 1979 care of the house passed to the Castletown Foundation, a charitable trust established to own, maintain and to continue the restoration of the house.

Members are asked to arrive at Lucan House & Demesne for 12pm. On arrival please drive up the avenue and park outside the residence.  The visit will conclude at Castletown House, Celbridge at approx. 4.30pm. Please bring picnic if desired. Numbers limited to 40 people. To book click here.
