Celebrating our 40 years work helped us to appreciate how much the Society has achieved.
The event was marked by a special anniversary exhibition "Defend and Inspire" which toured 10 venues throughout the nine counties of Ulster. It was customised for each county and showed the cultural and economic potential that exists in our built heritage. "Defend and Inspire" was launched 8th November 2008 at Stormont's Long Gallery by the then Environment Minister, Arlene Foster MLA. She said of the Society
"...we need an active and engaged group of citizens to ensure that the threats which the built heritage faces and the benefits it offers are firmly placed in the public mind" She added that the Society's work monitoring and commenting on planning application, has provided an invaluable service to the wider community by helping to engender publi discussion and debate."
The 40th Birthday Gala Dinner was held on 24th November 2007 at the Belfast Harbour Office, birthplace of the Society in 1967. The guest of honour was the absolutely fabulous Joanna Lumley. Joanna told the guests,
"We have had many happy visits to Northern Ireland and an important element of the satisfaction of those visits has been an appeciation of the distinctive architecture of Ulster. We have stayed in a number of houses from different periods in Northern Ireland - some of them represented in those marvellous books by Sir Charles Brett - which the Society must be very proud to have published. Comparative works of such excellence on individual counties are really hard to find."
We are looking forward to the celebration or our 50th Anniversary in 2017...............watch this space!
